Why Are Pet Vaccinations Important?
Vaccinations are a crucial part of your pet’s preventive healthcare. Here’s why they matter:
- Prevents Serious Illnesses
- Vaccines protect pets from a range of potentially life-threatening diseases, including viral and bacterial infections.
- Boosts Immunity & Reduces Outbreaks
- Vaccinated animals are less likely to catch and spread contagious diseases within your home and the wider pet community.
- Required for Boarding & Travel
- Up-to-date vaccinations are often necessary for boarding, daycare, grooming services, and travel.
- Protects the Community
- Vaccinating your pet also helps reduce the risk of outbreaks and protects other animals they may come into contact with.
Staying on top of your pet’s vaccination schedule keeps them healthier, safer, and better protected from preventable diseases.
Core & Non-Core Dog Vaccinations Explained
Core Vaccinations (Essential for Every Dog)
These vaccines are mandatory as they protect against severe and highly contagious diseases:
- Canine Parvovirus (CPV) – A deadly virus causing vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration.
- Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) – Affects the respiratory and nervous systems, often fatal.
- Canine Hepatitis (CAV) – Causes liver damage and can be life-threatening.
Non-Core Vaccinations (Recommended Based on Lifestyle)
Some vaccines are optional but highly recommended, depending on your dog’s environment and exposure risks:
- Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – Essential for dogs that socialise, board, or attend daycare.
- Canine Parainfluenza – Protects against highly contagious respiratory infections.
- Leptospirosis – Recommended if your dog has access to puddles (contaminated water sources, dead or live rodents and swimming in stagnant water. Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial disease that can affect both dogs and humans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, certain vaccinations are required for boarding, daycare, and travel.
Generally speaking., vaccinations are very well tolerated by the majority of the pet population. Like humans, all pets have different immune systems and immune triggers. Some pets may experience mild side effects after their pet’s vaccination which can be very normal. Uncommonly some pets can be unwell after a vaccination so we routinely recommend that you spend some time with your pet after their vaccination to ensure they are OK.
Most pets tolerate vaccination very well. The vast majority of pets carry on as if nothing has even happened! However, some pets may experience mild lethargy, inappetance and transient discomfort at the site of the injection. These symptoms often resolve within 24-48 hours. A small number of pets may experience more than this so we always encourage people to be near their pets after a vaccination to keep an eye on them. If you have any concerns with your pet after a vaccination, please do not hesitate to call us
Yes ! We tailor every pet’s vaccination schedule depending on their medical history, their lifestyle and your personal preferences. We do offer annual blood test titre levels that look to see fi your pet has protective levels of antibodies to some of the diseases we vaccinate against. If your pet has high antibody levels to some of the diseases we may not need to re-vaccinate your pet and can assess these levels each year instead. (Note: these tests are not available for kennel cough or leptospirosis in dogs)
If your pet has been diagnosed with an immune disease we would encourage you to make an appointment with our Vets to discuss vaccination for your pet. These cases need special care and we need to navigate vaccinations carefully based on a number of factors which can be discussed during the consultation
